Thaipusam in Singapore… Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu god Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi (a cage like structure that they carry, usually weighting up to 15kg) on his shoulder. Finally, he goes on a 4km journey of faith. They end at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple in Little India.
Steve and I took Madi down on a Sunday afternoon to watch this interesting cultural event. It was PACKED and so interesting! We could not believe the pricings! It was pretty neat to see the dedication.
