Bali

The cutest sick baby in little 'scrubs' that I have ever seen
She was still her silly little self
IV and on the move
Finally home and healthy...Thank God!!
Hot tea and cold beer on our porch after a nice day
The sun sets over the pool
Oh look it is raining, what a surprise!
While waiting for test results we had lunch overlooking the rice paddies and volcano

After a long day Mai is exhausted!
Madi loves light switches, she would spend twenty minutes turing them all on and off, we had a great time!
Bali made all things beautiful just because
Lunch at a beautiful little place, enjoying Bintang beer and watching the rain
Madi and Mommy exploring

Daddy and Madi at the hotel
Teh view from our porch
Madi and the monkeys
The fam in the Monkey Forest
Below...so many Monkeys!

Ubud, Bali

We flew to Bali on Sunday and arrived at 10pm. We got to our hotel at about 11:30, it was called Nick’s Hidden Cottages…they weren’t kidding….you had to walk on a 250 meter sidewalk in the middle of rice paddies…but at almost midnight it was a bit scary. We found our rooms, had a drink on the porch and went to bed. We woke up in typical Bali paradise. We were surrounded by lush tropical forests on one side and rice paddies on the other. We headed into town after a nice breakfast to look around. We went to the Monkey Forest first. Of course there were monkeys everywhere…I am not a fan of monkeys…but we had to go see them. After that we shopped a bit and then it rained so we went back to the hotel for Madi’s nap. We went for dinner at a beautiful restaurant that Steve and I had been to two years ago when we were in Bali with Shannan and Adam. We had a wonderful dinner and went home to bed. Tuesday we went shopping and had massages. Wednesday my parents went on a tour of the island, temples, rice terraces, coffee plantation, volcano, etc. Steve and I did not join them because Madi had had a fever since Saturday, which we figured was due to teething because she always has a fever when she teeths. But Wednesday morning she woke up with a rash on her back and chest…this was not good. Singapore has a high rate of a disease called Dengue Fever, it is spread by mosquitos and has killed many people already. Singapore has very strict procedures for making sure that mosquitos can not easily breed and they “fog” twice a week to kill any larva. Anyway, the signs of this disease are high fever and a rash…so we headed straight to the only clinic in Ubud. The doctor said we should take a blood test, so they stuck our little girl with a needle…no fun. They sent the blood to the nearest big city, Denpasar and we got the results back in abut four hours. The results were not good, all signs pointed to Dengue Fever and we told to admit her to the hospital. So we immediately hopped in the ‘ambulance” and got dropped off at the hospital an hour away. The care was amazing, we were met immediately by a doctor who was called in advance and knew Madi’s condition and then a pediatrician saw her soon after. We were admitted for the night. The room was very nice, bigger and nicer than most hotel rooms we have been in, but not nearly as fun! There was no crib, or “baby box’ as they called it so Steve and I took turns staying up all night so that she would not fall out of bed. The next morning they took her blood again, an hour later we found out that she was actually getting worse…we were told to stay another night and put Madi on IV. The poor little girl was given so many needles already and now she had a needle in her hand attached to an adult sized IV pole. The pics are super cute, but the situation was not! Steve went back to our hotel to get all of our stuff, including Madi’s play pen so that we could all get some sleep. Another brutal night. The next morning the blood work showed that she was improving, not back to normal, but the doctor’s saw enough of an improvement to allow us to check out and catch our flight home that night! We were thrilled!!
We went back to Ubud and got my parents. We went for lunch (first real meal in two days) and did a bit of shopping, then to the airport!
We got home late that night and went to bed. Saturday morning we got up and took Madi to the hospital (doctor’s orders from Bali) to get her blood tested again. The doctor was great in Singapore and her final blood test showed that she was healthy again. They concluded that Madi had Rosiola inphantom , a common symptom of a virus. In hindsight, she would have been fine if she was not hospitalized…but we were glad that she was well looked after.
We have never had to go through anything like this and it was awful. Worrying about a sick child is horrible. We are so glad that it is over and that out little angel is okay.
We are glad that my parents were still able to enjoy Ubud, even though they worried a lot and called often.
The trip wasn’t all bad, we were able to find a few great treasures, including a cool little wooden shelf and a great mosaic bowl and few great purses!

It is now Christmas Eve day, we are off to Sentosa Island (equivalent to Toronto Island) for the day, then to church and dinner and then Santa comes!!Tomorrow we are going for a beautiful champagne brunch and having Christmas at the apartment.
Then boxing day we will be flying to Hanoi! We hope that everyone has a very Merry Christmas! We are missing all of you so much.

Til next time
